Looking back on dissemination: International One Health Symposium (Berlin)

As we continue to look back on a year of scientific outreach within the Yellow4FLAVI consortium, we are pleased to highlight the contribution of Marialuigia Caporale, PhD student in Dr Alessio Lorusso’s lab (IZS Teramo), who attended and presented at the International One Health Symposium, held in Berlin in October 2025.
The symposium brought together experts working across human, animal and environmental health — offering an ideal One Health forum to discuss emerging and re-emerging mosquito-borne viruses and the research needed to strengthen preparedness in Europe.
Marialuigia Caporale presented progress from Yellow4FLAVI Task 1.5, led by IZS Teramo, which explores immune responses relevant to two flaviviruses of growing importance in Europe: Usutu virus (USUV) and West Nile virus (WNV).
The work focuses on understanding whether immune responses triggered by key USUV proteins may contribute to protection against WNV — helping to clarify how immunity may interact across related viruses that can co-circulate in the same regions.
As the geographic spread and seasonal activity of mosquito-borne flaviviruses continue to evolve, it becomes increasingly important to understand immune relationships between viruses like USUV and WNV. This knowledge can support future approaches to risk assessment, surveillance and prevention, in line with Yellow4FLAVI’s One Health mission
