Yellow fever virus (vaccine strain 17D) in human SW13 cells. An enveloped flavivirus prototype of the Flaviviridae family, approximately 50 nanometres in diameter. Transmitted horizontally to humans and monkeys by the bite of the infectious mosquito Aedes mosquito. Transmitted vertically from the virus to its by infected eggs. Three types of disease cycle: selvatic, intermediate or urban. Severe hepatonephritis is fatal in 10 to 50% of cases. (Magnification X 160000) Colourised image.
