Taking stock of progress with Yellow4FLAVI’s social scientists

In addition to its cutting-edge immunology and vaccinology research, Yellow4FLAVI incorporates an ambitious social science research initiative focused on developing approaches to risk communication for new vaccine technologies in two contrasting settings – Germany and Colombia.

The first stage of this work involves conducting focus group discussions with people across both countries. With significant progress in data collection, on Thursday October 17th, Paula Dau and Miriam Rumpel (Charité - Universitaetsmedizin Berlin, leading WP5) were delighted to welcome Christopher Pell (AIGHD - Stichting Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development) for in-person meetings in Berlin.

After months of remote collaboration, the face-to-face interaction provided valuable insights into the ongoing qualitative analysis of focus group transcripts from Germany. In total, eight focus groups were successfully conducted across various regions of Germany throughout August and September 2024.

Later that afternoon, the team held a virtual meeting with the CIDEIM Corporacion Centro Internacional De Entrenamiento e Investigaciones Medicas team based in Colombia. It was both enjoyable and unique to have most of the European team together in the same room! During this session, the teams discussed the codebooks used for the qualitative analysis of focus group data. While focus groups in Colombia are still underway, the collaboration continues to be strong.

We are excited about our continued cooperation and look forward to more face-to-face  meetings of WP5 social scientists in the future!
